About Nine Men's Morris

Nine Men's Morris is an ancient strategy game whose board has been found carved into stones from Roman times. Each player has nine pieces. First you take turns placing them on the 24 points of the board, then you slide them along the lines. Whenever you line up three of your pieces along a line you have made a mill, and you remove one of your opponent's pieces.

When a player is down to three pieces they can fly to any empty point, which makes the endgame tense and surprising. Reduce your opponent to two pieces, or leave them with no legal move, to win. Play the easy or hard computer, or a friend on the same device.

How to play

  1. Placing: tap an empty point to place one of your nine pieces.
  2. Moving: tap one of your pieces, then a green neighbouring point.
  3. Three in a line makes a mill: tap a glowing rival piece to remove it.
  4. With three pieces left you can fly anywhere. Leave your rival with two pieces to win.

About Nine Men's Morris

Nine Men's Morris boards have been found on Roman buildings and medieval cathedrals. It is a game of two phases, placing then moving, and a third one at the end when a player with three pieces can fly.

Tips to score higher

  • During placing, don't rush mills; keep your pieces flexible and spread out.
  • A double mill, where one piece opens and closes two mills, wins material every turn.
  • Avoid getting boxed in: a player with no legal move loses.
  • When you remove a piece, take one that blocks your plans or threatens a mill.
