How to use the dice roller

Choose how many dice you need, from one to six, and the type of die. Press Roll the dice, press Space or tap the dice themselves. The dice tumble for a moment, then show their values and the total. Every roll is listed under the dice so you can check earlier results.

After a roll you can tap any die to hold it. Held dice keep their value and are skipped on the next roll, which is exactly what you need in games where you re-roll only some of your dice. Tap a held die again to release it.

    Which dice can I roll?

    • D6: the classic six-sided die with pips, used in most board games and family games.
    • D4, D8, D10, D12 and D20: the polyhedral dice used in tabletop role-playing games. The D20 decides attacks and skill checks in many of them, and two D10s are often used to roll a percentage.

    Are online dice fair?

Each die is rolled with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, using a method that avoids the small bias that simple random formulas can introduce. Every face has exactly the same chance, and each roll is independent of the one before. Real dice are close to fair, but worn corners, uneven weight and the way they are thrown can all make a small difference. Virtual dice do not have those problems, and they never roll off the table.

    Probability with two dice

With one six-sided die, every number from 1 to 6 has the same chance: one in six. With two dice the totals are no longer equal. There are 36 possible combinations, and six of them add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2 and 6+1), so 7 is the most common total, at about 16.7%. A total of 2 or 12 can each be made in only one way, a chance of 1 in 36, or about 2.8%. Many board games are designed around this pattern, which is why the middle totals come up so often.

Games you can play with it

    • Backgammon: roll two D6 each turn.
    • Ludo and snakes and ladders: one D6 is all you need.
    • Five-dice games: choose five D6, then hold the dice you want to keep and re-roll the rest, up to three times per turn.
    • Role-playing games: switch between D20 for checks and D4 to D12 for damage.

From one to six dice of the same type in each roll.

Can I keep some dice and re-roll the others?

    Can I roll a D20?

Yes. Choose D20 in the type menu. D4, D8, D10 and D12 are there too.

What is the most likely total with two dice?

Does it work without an internet connection?

If you have opened the page before, your browser can usually open it again from its cache, even on a weak connection.
